The History of Nicotine Pouches: From Snus to Modern Pouch

The modern white nicotine pouch you can buy today is the latest step in a long evolution that began in 18th-century Sweden. Understanding this history helps make sense of why pouches look and work the way they do, and why a tobacco-free format emerged in the 21st century. This guide is a brief, readable history for the curious.
18th-century Sweden: the birth of snus
Snus — moist tobacco placed under the upper lip — emerged in Sweden in the early 1700s. It was an alternative to nasal snuff (popular elsewhere in Europe) and to chewing tobacco. By the 1800s, snus was deeply embedded in Swedish daily life.
Snus stayed largely a Scandinavian phenomenon for the next 200 years. While other smokeless tobacco products developed independently in many cultures, the Swedish form remained distinct in its preparation, taste and ritual.
Late 20th century: portion pouches
Until the 1970s, snus was 'loose' — users formed a small ball of tobacco by hand and placed it under the lip. In 1973, the first portion-packed snus was introduced — pre-formed pouches that made the experience cleaner and more consistent.
Portion pouches transformed snus globally and made the format much more accessible to users outside Sweden. The form factor — a small soft pouch under the upper lip — became the template that modern nicotine pouches inherited.
Early 2000s: the white pouch idea
By the early 2000s, manufacturers began experimenting with 'white' versions of snus that used less moisture and bleached the tobacco. This was a step toward cleaner appearance, less staining and longer release times.
The next step was a logical leap: what if the pouch contained no tobacco at all? Plant fibre carrying pharmaceutical nicotine could deliver a similar experience without tobacco's taste, colour and stains.
2014–2019: the modern nicotine pouch emerges
ZYN launched in 2014 in the United States as one of the first widely-available tobacco-free nicotine pouches. Velo followed in 2019 as a global brand. Other brands — Pablo, White Fox, On! and Lyft — built out the modern category over the same window.
By 2020, the modern white pouch was a recognisable global category, distinct from traditional snus and from cigarettes. It was clean, white, flavoured beyond the traditional snus palette, and available across many strengths.
2020s: global expansion and innovation
The 2020s brought rapid international expansion. Nicotine pouches became available in dozens of countries, including India from around 2022–2023. The category innovated quickly: heat-activated pouches (Velo Shift), premium icy mints (White Fox), and ever-wider flavour selections.
By 2026, India is one of the fastest-growing markets globally, with all major brands available through authorised online retailers.
Where the format goes from here
The next decade is likely to bring even cleaner formulations, smarter packaging, and more sustainable pouch materials. The core idea — discreet, smoke-free, oral nicotine in a small white pouch — is now a permanent fixture of the global nicotine market.
